High energy, creative, and built on real technique. Our hip hop program teaches kids and teens the authentic foundations of hip hop dance — freestyle, musicality, and movement — in a fun, supportive studio environment.
Hip hop is one of the most popular and expressive dance styles in the world — and one of the most misunderstood when it comes to proper training. At Steps Dance Center in Aurora, IL, we teach hip hop the right way: rooted in its cultural origins, built on authentic technique, and delivered by faculty who have actually performed it professionally on national stages and television.
Our hip hop classes are high energy and creative, but they are also structured and progressive. Students don't just learn choreography — they learn to move, to freestyle, to listen to music, and to express themselves with confidence. These are skills that go far beyond the dance studio.
Whether your child is brand new to dance or has years of experience, our hip hop program meets them exactly where they are — and pushes them forward.
Ages 4 – 6 · 30 or 45 min
A high-energy intro to hip hop for the littlest movers. Students learn basic grooves, rhythm, and movement games through age-appropriate music and imaginative play. No experience needed — just bring your energy.
Ages 7 – 10 · 45 or 60 min
Students learn foundational hip hop technique including grooves, isolations, and basic combinations. Choreography is introduced and students perform at the annual recital and holiday show.
Ages 10 – 13 · 60 min
Stronger technique with more complex choreography, musicality work, and freestyle exploration. Students at this level begin developing their own movement voice while building on a solid technical foundation.
Ages 12+ · 60 or 75 min
Advanced students work on intricate choreography, performance dynamics, and competition-ready material. This level is the direct pathway to auditions for Steps Dance Company and Steps Dance Crew.
Teens & Adult · 60 min
Open to teens (13+) and adults at all levels. A non-competitive, welcoming environment for anyone who wants to learn real hip hop — whether you're a complete beginner or a returning dancer. Great workout. Great music. No judgment.

We welcome hip hop students as young as 4 years old in our Mini Hip Hop class. At this age, classes are centered on fun, rhythm, and basic movement through age-appropriate music and games. Older beginners are always welcome too — we have classes for teens and adults with zero prior experience.
No experience is required at any level. Hip hop is one of the most beginner-friendly styles we offer. Our team will place your child in the right class based on their age and any dance background they may have. Many students start hip hop with no dance experience at all and thrive immediately.
Hip hop students wear comfortable clothes they can move in — sweats, joggers, or athletic wear are all great. Clean, non-marking sneakers with good ankle support are required (no street shoes worn outside). Hair should be pulled back away from the face. No specific uniform is required for hip hop — just come ready to move.
Yes — always. Our instructors carefully select music that is age-appropriate for every class level. Parents never need to worry about inappropriate lyrics or content. Clean versions and instrumental tracks are used throughout our younger classes, and all music choices are reviewed by our faculty.
Yes! All hip hop students are invited to perform in our annual June Recital at Neuqua Valley High School and our Holiday Show in December. These performances are a highlight of the year for students and families alike. Participation is encouraged but never required.
Yes. Hip hop is a central style in all three of our competitive programs — Steps Dance Company, Steps Dance Crew, and Steps Dance Team. Advanced hip hop students interested in competing can audition for any of these programs. Contact our director Rebecca Rosenberg at rebecca@stepsdancecenteronline.com for details.
The biggest difference is our faculty. Our hip hop instructors have toured internationally with major recording artists, appeared on national television, and taught at the most respected commercial dance studios in the country. There is no other dance studio in the Aurora or Naperville area with hip hop faculty credentials at this level. Your child learns from instructors who have actually done it — at the highest level in the industry.
